The congregation of Edinburgh St Andrew's Free Church was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister of the collegiate charge of Edinburgh St Andrew's, John Bruce, one of his elders, and around 300 of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. Worship took place initially in the Waterloo Room until 1844 when a church to house the congregation was opened in George Street. This church however was regarded as 'airless' and 'depressing', and consequently in 1886 the congregation was transported to a newly erected, and more worthy building in Drumsheugh Gardens. In 1900, at the time of the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, St Andrew's Free became St Andrew's United Free Church and in 1929, following the union between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, St Andrew's United Free was renamed Edinburgh St Andrew's Drumsheugh, Church of Scotland. The congregation of Edinburgh St Andrew's Clermiston was later formed in 1955 when the congregation of Clermiston united with St Andrew's Drumsheugh. |
