Mount Kedar (Ruthwell) Free Church originated at the Disruption, when the minister and many of the congregation of Ruthwell parish church adhered to the Free Church. Initially the congregation worshipped in the open air, but a church building at Mount Kedar was opened in 1843, reconstructed in 1859 and altered internally in 1893. The congregation passed to the United Free Church in 1900 and the Church of Scotland in 1929. In the latter case the charge was named Mount Kedar Church of Scotland to differentiate it from the existing Church of Scotland charge in Ruthwell. However, these two charges united in 1934 to become Ruthwell and Mount Kedar Church of Scotland. The united charge was in the presbytery and synod of Dumfries. A link was established with the Cummertrees congregation in 1969, and a further link with Mouswald in 1980, and at this time 'Mount Kedar' was dropped from the name, and the charge became known simply as Ruthwell Church of Scotland. |
