Edinburgh, Liberton Free Church was formed at the Disruption, when the minister of Liberton adhered to the Free Church. A church was built at Newington. A congregation had also been formed nearby at Gilmerton, and in 1856 both Gilmerton and Liberton were assigned to the congregation previously known as Gilmerton, thereafter as Liberton. It transferred to the United Free Church and subsequently to the Church of Scotland, as Edinburgh Liberton Northfield. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Edinburgh and until the abolition of synods in 1993 was in the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. |
