St John?s Renfield Church, Glasgow, originated in the union of several United Free churches. The oldest of these was Renfield United Free. St John?s United Free Church originated at the Disruption, when the minister and most of the congregation of St John?s Church left the Church of Scotland. St John?s Free (later United Free) Church was at 201 George Street and was dedicated in 1845. It terminated in 1923 on uniting with Renfield as St John?s and Renfield United Free, which worshipped in the former Renfield building in Elmbank Street. In 1927 this terminated in turn, uniting with Hyndland United Free as St John?s and Renfield and Hyndland, later St John?s Renfield. Thereafter the congregation used both the former Renfield and former Hyndland buildings. As a Church of Scotland charge it is in the presbytery of Glasgow and was formerly in the synod of Clydesdale. |
