The congregation of Edinburgh Newington United Presbyterian Church first originated in December 1847 when the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Edinburgh was approached by a group of United Presbyterians with a request that they be granted permission to purchase the Duncan Street Baptist Chapel. The request was granted, as was the supply of service, and the charge of Duncan Street United Presbyterian was officially formed in March of the following year. The first minister of the congregation, James Robertson, was ordained in October 1848. In 1863 the congregation was transported to a new church, which had recently been erected in Grange Road, and the charge was renamed Grange Road United Presbyterian. The old Duncan Street church reverted back to serve as a Baptist Chapel. In 1900, following the union of the United Presbytrians and the Free Church, Grange Road United Presbyterian was renamed Edinburgh Newington South United Free Church, and following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church Newington South United Free became Newington South Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1940, Newington South joined with the former United Free congregation of Hope Park, under the name of Newington South and Hope Park. |
