Greenock, St Columba's Gaelic Free Church originated at the Disruption, when almost all of the members of the existing established church adhered to the Free Church. There was a general decline of the Gaelic-speaking population of the town, and the congregation suffered a loss of members in 1893 owing to the Declaratory Act. In 1900 the congregation passed to the United Free Church as Greenock Gaelic United Free Church, and in 1929 the charge passed back to the Established Church as Greenock St Columba Gaelic Church of Scotland. A union with Greenock North Church of Scotland took place on 10 January 1979; the united charge taking the name Greenock Old West Kirk. A further union took place on 2 June 2011 with the charges of Greenock: Ardgowan and Greenock: Finnart St Paul's. The united charge taking the name Greenock: Lyle Community Kirk. In 2012 the word 'community' was dropped from the title. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Greenock and the synod of Clydesdale. |
