Edinburgh, West Port (Chalmers' Territorial) Free Church originated in 1844 with mission work in the slum area of West Port by Thomas Chalmers, to some extent as a social experiment. The charge was eventually sanctioned the church officially opened in 1847. In 1884 a large new church was erected and the old one retained as a mission hall. In 1900 the congregation passed to the United Free Church as Chalmers Territorial United Free Church. The mission hall was sold in 1927 and the proceeds used to pay for a hall adjoining the new church. The congregation then passed to the Established Church in 1929 as Edinburgh Chalmers Church of Scotland and came under the juristiction of the Presbytery of Edinburgh and the synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. It united with Lauriston as Edinburgh Chalmers Lauriston in 1958 and the Chalmers church was demolished. |
