Hawick Free Church originated at the Disruption, when the minister of Hawick and most of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. A new church building was completed in 1844. Separate congregations in the town were formed by the disjunctions of Hawick St Andrew's and Hawick West Port. It passed successively to the United Free Church, as Hawick St George's, and to the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge, which was in the presbytery of Hawick and the synod of Merse and Teviotdale, united with Hawick West Port as Hawick St George's West in 1959. |
