The beginnings of the congregation of Edinburgh Hope Park (antiburgher) congregation can be traced back to 1792 when it was disjoined from the theFirst Secession charge of Edinburgh, Nicholson Street. Initially meeting in a church in Lady Lawson's Wynd, a new church was built in Potterrow in 1793 and fwhen the congregation became known as Potterrow Antiburgher Congregation. In 1847 the Secession (including Antiburgher congregations) and Relief churches united to form the United Presbyterian Church, and the congregation at Potterrow followed suit. A number of years later in 1867 the Potterrow congregation erected another new church, on this occasion at Hope Park, and following transportation to this new location, the charge was renamed Hope Park United Presbyterian Church. It passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland in 1900 and 1929 respectively. Hope Park Church of Scotland was later united in 1940 with the former United Free congregation of Newington South to form the session of Newington South and Hope Park, and as a result of this local union the Hope Park church was sold. |
