Lochend and New Abbey Free Church was formed by the union in 1861 of two mission stations, 6 miles apart. The charge was sanctioned in 1863, with churches built in both places (in 1868 and 1878 respectively). The congregation passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, in the latter case as Lochend, which linked with New Abbey in 1952. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright (formerly Dumfries) and was in the synod of Dumfries until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
