Portree United Presbyterian Church began as a station established by the United Secession in 1840. Services were held for a time in the courthouse, and since candles were forbidden, sometimes in the dark. A regular missionary was established in 1855, with his own church from 1860. In 1862 he was inducted as minister. Problems remained, however, due to the poverty of the congregation and difficulties in finding United Presbyterian Gaelic preachers. It passed to the United Free Church as Portree Adam Memorial (Alexander Adam having been the first minister), but was still very small. It united with Portree United Free under the latter name in 1911. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Skye and the synod of Glenelg. |
