The congregation of Edinburgh Bread Street began life in 1818 as Cowgate Relief Church. In 1828 however, as a result of financial difficulties, the session was forced to move out of the Cowgate Church and had to worship in the Freemason's Hall in Niddry Street until a new church was opened in Bread Street in 1831. Following this move the charge became known as Bread Street United Presbyterian and met within Bread Street Church until 1883, at which time a further transportation of the congregation was made to a newly erected church on the corner of Leamington Terrace and Westhall Gardens. Following this move the Bread Street building was sold to St Cuthberts and the congregation adopted the name of Viewforth United Presbyterian In 1900, at the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Viewforth United Presbyterian was renamed Bruntsfield United Free Church. |
