The local proprietor of Papa Westray built a new church in 1841 to accommodate the whole population of the island. However, the church was shut-up until the Disruption of 1843, when it was given over to the Free Church, and Papa Westray was formed into a congregation, under the charge of a probationer. At the first vacancy there was much discussion as to whether the congregation should continue, but the Assembly sanctioned its continuance in 1856, and the congregation grew considerably after that time. In 1877 Westray became a separate station (sometimes referred to as Rapness). |
