The first meeting of the founders and managers of Alloa Library took place on the 24th October 1777. A group of preachers, resident at various locations throughout Scotland had, a number of years prior, agreed that, for the advancement of learning, they should set about the task of setting up a library within the old town of Alloa. The founders had themselves contributed sums of money for the purchase of the initial collection of books and it was perceived that the library would sustain itself through means of further book donations, and also through the paid subscriptions of regular library users. Regular library users included students of both Divinity and Philosophy. On the 25th September 1787, following the death of the President of the library, William Moncreiff, and the appointed by the Associate Synod of his successor , Archibald Bruce of Whitburn, it was agreed that the Library should be removed from Alloa and relocated at the Divinity Hall in Whitburn. |
