Beith, Mitchell Street, Antiburgher Church originated with a disputed settlement in the parish church, leading to an application for sermon to the Associate Presbytery in 1758. A church was built in the following year and the first minister ordained in 1761. Its early years were adversely affected by the abandonment of Secession principles by its first minister only two years after ordination, and then in the 1780s by deep divisions over the Lifter controversy. It flourished in the 19th century, however, joined the United Presbyterian Church and erected a new church building, opened in 1893. It passed to the United Free Church, but Beith was over-supplied with United Free churches and a local union took place in 1917. Beith Head Street, Beith Mitchell Street and Beith Hamilfield united as Beith United Free. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Paisley and the synod of Glasgow. |
