Beith, Head Street, Relief Church dated from 1783, when a Free Presbyterian Society was formed in the town, dedicated to oppose 'the unscriptural yoke of Patronage'. At first the intention was not to break with the established church, but this position became untenable and in 1784 an application for sermon was made to Glasgow Relief Presbytery. A church was built and the first minister ordained in 1788. The congregation passed successively to the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches, in the latter case as Beith Head Street, which united with Beith Hamilfield and Beith Mitchell Street as Beith United Free in 1917. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Paisley and the synod of Glasgow. |
