Dumfries, Martyrs' Free Church originated as Quarrelwood and Dumfries, an early Reformed Presbyterian congregation. As usual with that denomination, the area covered in the 18th century was very large, in this case almost all of Dumfriesshire, and Dumfries itself only obtained its own church in 1832. The congregation adhered to the Free Church as Dumfries Martyrs' in 1876, still in a healthy state as far as numbers were concerned, but members then began to drift away to Free Churches in their own areas. It passed to the United Free Church but dissolved in 1924. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Dumfries and Penpont and in the synod of Dumfries and Galloway. |
