Urr Antiburgher Church had its remote origins in a local dissenting tradition in the 17th century, especially during the ministry of John Hepburn in the parish church, from 1680 to 1723. A large proportion of the population adhered to the Associate Presbytery and built a church in 1743 (replaced 1760 and 1798). The congregation took the Antiburgher side in that dispute and had a minister ordained in 1748. It passed successively to the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches, with a new church dedicated in 1910. It was reduced in status in 1927, but transferred to the Church of Scotland at the union of 1929 as Hardgate, which united with Urr as Urr in 1930. The United Free charge was in the presbytery of Kirkcudbright and the synod of Dumfries and Galloway. |
