Kilwinning United Secession Church originated with an Antiburgher congregation in the town whose first minister was ordained in 1763. At the union of 1820 with the Burghers the minister refused to adhere and left with part of his congregation. The remainder, established as a preaching station, built a church in 1824 and had a new minister ordained in 1827. This congregation passed successively to the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches, in the latter case as Kilwinning Erskine, and to the Church of Scotland. The congregation was linked with that of Fergushill in 1958. The Church of Scotland charge is in the presbytery of Ardrossan and was in the synod of Ayr until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
