Darvel Reformed Presbyterian Church was originally part of the large RP congregation of Renfrew and Ayr, created in 1776. A church was built in 1785 and the Darvel adherents asked for disjunction in 1801. After some hesitation this was granted, but the first minister was not ordained until 1810. The church was rebuilt in 1835 and again in 1885. In 1876 the congregation joined the Free Church, but the introduction of hymns and paraphrases in 1882 led to a secession by dissentients who went on to form an Original Secession congregation. The main body transferred to the United Free Church as Darvel Easton Memorial (Matthew Easton having been their minister from 1861 to 1894), and to the Church of Scotland. It was reduced in status between 1949 and 1952, and united with Darvel Irvine Bank as Darvel Irvine Bank and Easton Memorial in 1956. The Church of Scotland charge was in the presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock and the synod of Ayr. |
