Kilmarnock High Free Church began at the Disruption, when the minister and almost all of the congregation of the established High church adhered to the Free Church and were joined by others from the Laigh Church. A new building was opened in 1844. Kilmarnock Grange Free Church was an offshoot from this congregation in 1876. Kilmarnock High passed successively to the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, in the latter case as Kilmarnock West High. The Church of Scotland charge, now Kilmarnock Laigh West High, is in the presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock and was in the synod of Ayr until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
