Dumbarton, Bridgend Relief Church originated with a petition for sermon to the Relief Presbytery of Glasgow by a body from Dumbarton, Cardross and Bonhill, partly as a result of patronage dispute in Cardross. A large new church was built in 1794 and a minister ordained in 1795, to serve a congregation mainly drawn from the Vale of Leven. It passed to the United Presbyterian Church, with a new church building opened in 1860, and to the United Free Church, as Dumbarton Bridgend. The Church of Scotland charge, which was in the presbytery of Dumbarton and the synod of Clydesdale, united with Dalreoch in 1984 as Dumbarton The West Kirk. |
