East Kilbride Relief Session Church arose from a disputed crown presentation to the parish, which caused a large-scale secession in 1791. A petition for sermon was made to Glasgow Relief Presbytery and a minister ordained in 1792 to serve a large congregation, with members from several neighbouring parishes. It passed to the United Free Church as East Kilbride West, which transferred from Hamilton presbytery to Glasgow in 1909, and at the union of 1929 to the Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland charge is now once more in the presbytery of Hamilton and was in the synod of Clydesdale until the abolition of synods in 1993. |
