The Kirk Session of Fearn was disjoined from that of Tarbert in or around the year 1628. Within the parish boundaries there stood the old and disused Abbey of St Ninian, which was restored to serve as the parish church. The Abbey church however was struck by lightning during the year 1742, causing the roof to give way during a service, consequently killing a considerable number of worshippers. The church was so badly damaged that it was decided to erect a new building, however by 1771 the new parish church had fallen into a ruinous state and so the Heritors took the decision to re-roof and repair the old Abbey Church. Work was completed by 1775 and the Abbey Church once more came to serve as the parish church of Fearn. Fearn Kirk Session later became known as Fearn Abbey and in 1962 the session united with the former United Free Church congregation of Fearn Central, under the name of Fearn. After the union the Central church was sold and the Abbey church underwent extensive renovations. A further union followed in 1978 with Nigg Chapelhill to form the session of Fearn Abbey and Nigg Chapelhill. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Tain. |
