The parish of Fenwick formed part of that of Kilmarnock until 1642, when it was disjoined by the General Assembly and erected as a separate parish, known for a time as the parish of New-Kilmarnock. The name Fenwick is thought have been derived from Fenwick Hill which sits within the bounds of the parish, close to the parish church, which was built in 1643. Fenwick Parish Church was destroyed by fire in 1929 but was restored in 1930 and re-dedicated in 1931. During the following year a union was established with the former United Free Church congregation of Fenwick West and the former Fenwick West was demolished a number of years later. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Irvine and presently sits within the Presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock. |
