Prior to the reformation the rectory of Balmaclellan belonged to the Chapel Royal of Stirling and the parish church was rebuilt in around the year 1750. Vicar for a time of the Church of Balmaclellan was Alexander Scott, who was tutor to Mary Queen of Scots and who, in this role, was sent to France with her in 1548. In 1957 Balmaclellan was linked with Corsock however this arrangement was terminated in 1963 to permit a link with Kells. Balmaclellan and Kells later went on to unite in 1992, under the name of Balmaclellan and Kells, and an additional link was established on the same date with Dalry, with a further link to follow in 1994 with Carsphairn. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
