The parish of Eckford belonged of old to the Abbey of Jedburgh and within the bounds of the parish there existed a chapel at Caverton, founded by Walter Ker of Cessford and confirmed by a charter of James IV in 1500. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1560 in the person of Robert Richardson. The parish church of Eckford was later rebuilt in 1662. In 1960 a link was established between Eckford and the charge of Crailing and the two sessions were later united in 1977 under the name of Crailing and Eckford. The united parish further linked with Oxnam with Roxburgh on the same date, this arrangement however was terminated in 1999 in favour of a link with Ancrum with Lilliesleaf. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Jedburgh, later of Jedburgh and Kelso and, following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Jedburgh once more. |
