In 1617 the three ancient parishes of Kilcholumkill, Kilblaan and Kilchievean were united together by a Commission of Parliament. Together they made up the southern end of Kintyre and so the name Southend was adopted for the united parishes. Some years later however in 1671 Kilchievan was severed from Southend Parish and joined to Kilchiaran, Kilchuslan and Kilmichael. The ancient church of Kilcholumkill was dedicated to St Columba and the church of Kilblann to St Blaan. In 1946 the parish church of Southend, known in later years as Southend St Blaan, formed a union with the United Free Church congregation of Southend St Columba, after the union the united charge continued under the name of Southend and both churches were transferred to and vested in the General Trustees. The former St Columba's church later ceased to be used as a place of worship in 1965 and was sold, along with the old manse, in 1970. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kintyre until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of South Argyll. |
