The Iona Youth Trust was established as a part of 'The Iona Community', which was founded in 1938 by the Rev George MacLeod, a parish minister in Glasgow. The Rev MacLeod in that year took a group of trainee ministers and unemployed shipworkers from Glasgow?s Clydeside to the island of Iona to rebuild part of the ancient abbey. The journey was intended partly as an experiment in living as a community that worked and worshipped together and the Iona Community as an organisation was established as an ecumenical Christian community committed to seeking new ways of living the Gospel in today's world. The Iona Youth Trust was first established in the 1940s and the Iona Community remains committed to engaging young people, with the Community's administrative headquarters in Glasgow serving as a base for its work with young people. The Iona Community continues today with some 200 members, all of whom are committed to "rebuilding the common life, through working for social and political change, striving for the renewal of the church with an ecumenical emphasis, and exploring new more inclusive approaches to worship, all based on an integrated understanding of spirituality". |
