The Kirk Session of Drumelzier was established following the Reformation in 1560. Prior to that, the church was a vicarage of Stobo. Ministers to the parish are recorded from 1575, with the induction of Thomas Bissait (who since 1563 had been exhorter to the parish). Following the establishment of presbyteries by the General Assembly in 1581, the Kirk Session of Drumelzier became part of the Presbytery of Peebles. With the restructuring of presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. The pre-Reformation chapel acted as the Parish Church until the late 1700s when a new church was built. This new structure, however, incorporated parts of the earlier medieval church. Over the years, a number of changes have been made to the parish: in 1643, Upper Drumelzier was separated from the parish to form the new Parish of Tweedsmuir; in 1742, Drumelzier absorbed the western portion of the Parish of Dawyck; in 1951, the parish was united with Stobo, while the southern part was united with Tweedsmuir; in 1960, Stobo and Drumelzier was linked with Tweedsmuir; and in early 1977, Stobo and Drumelzier linked with Tweedsmuir, was linked with Broughton, Glenholm and Kilbucho linked with Skirling. |
