In 1836 John, second Marquess of Bute, built and endowed a church to serve the northern area of Bute and a number of years later in 1844 the parish of North Bute was disjoined from that of Rothesay and erected as a separate charge. The name of the parish was later changed to North Bute St Colmac's and St Ninian's as there existed within the bounds of the parish a church dedicated to St Colmac (built in 1835) and another with a dedication to St Ninian, which was erected at Port Bannatyne in 1886. In 1956 a union was formed between North Bute St Colmac's and St Ninian's, and the former United Free Church congregation of Port Bannatyne St Bruoc's. After the union the session continued under the name of North Bute St Colmac's, St Bruoc's and St Ninian's. In more recent year the parish reverted back to the original name of North Bute and is presently termed Bute United. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Dunoon. |
