The church of Montrose, which became a collegiate charge shortly after the Revolution, was dedicated to St John the Baptist and the parish was of old a prebend of Brechin. During the 16th century a second charge of the parish was erected and in 1829 a chapel-of-ease (which later became St John's church) was opened for public worship. There is thought to have been a parish church in existence in Montrose from as early as the 13th century and the present day building was rebuilt in 1791. On 23 May 1931 the two charges of Montrose Parish church united and the old parish church later underwent renovation work during the 1950s. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Brechin and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united together under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
