Within the bounds of the parish of Caerlaverock there existed a Chapel of St Columba and ministry of the session is recorded from 1564, in the person of John Patterson, reader. The parish church of Caerlaverock belonged of old to the Collegiate Church of Lincluden. In 1929, the year that a union took place between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Caerlaverock was joined with the United Free Church congregation of Glencaple to form the session of Caerlaverock and Glencaple. Both churches were retained after the union and both underwent renovations during the 1950s. Glencaple was later dropped from the session name and in 1983 a link was established with Dumfries St Michael's and South, this arrangement was however terminated in 1996. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dumfries, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
