The church of Laurencekirk, which was known of old as Conveth, was dedicated to St Laurence and formerly belonged to the priory of St Andrews. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567, in the person of Patrick Ramsay. The present church was built in 1804 replacing a prior building which had been erected in 1626. In 1954, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Laurencekirk Parish church, known in later years as Laurencekirk East, united with the former United Free Church congregation of Laurencekirk West. After the union the united session continued under the name of Laurencekirk and a link was established a number of years later with Aberluthnott. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Fordoun, later of Brechin and Fordoun and, following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Kincardine and Deeside. |
