The church of Avendale, which was also known of old as Strathaven was dedicated to St Mary and formerly belonged to the collegiate church of Bothwell. By 1772 the old church of St Mary's had grown too small for the growing population of Strathaven and so in that year the Heritors chose to erect a new church on an alternative site. A mission chapel was later built within the parish bounds in 1837 but this building was later sold and the proceeds were used to erect the Drumclog Memorial Church. In 1879 the Parish Church underwent a complete reconstruction and in 1984 Drumclog was added to the name of the parish, which became termed Strathaven Avendale Old and Drumclog. The Kirk Session sits within the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
