At the Disruption in 1843 a large proportion of St David's church seceded. The new congregation initially worshipped in an old mill until the opening of church premises in Ward Road in 1844. During the 1860's St David's ran a mission in Brown Street School. In 1873 a manse was built. After the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterian Church in 1900, the church building had vested in the United Free Church. The congregation of St David's sold the church in 1908 with the intention of relocating. After which the congregation worshipped in the hall of the Young Men's Christian Association. St David's was united with School Wynd church in 1909 although this union was dissolved in 1910. The congregation of St David's found another temporary place of worship with the Willison congregation in Barrack Street church until the erection of an iron church in 1913. At this time the congregation was renamed St David's in the West United Free church. In 1929 the iron church, nicknamed Tin Kirkie, was removed to Wetherby place in the north of Dundee where the congregation continued to worship. In the same year the foundation stone of a new church was laid which was to open in 1930. St David's church was restored to full status in 1934. A new church hall opened in 1956 and repairs to the church building were undertaken in 1958 and 1966. St David's Free church became St David's United Free church in 1900, St David's in the West in 1915, St David's' United Free Church in 1929 and St David's North later in that year on the relocation to Strathmore Avenue. St David's North was linked with Albany Butterburn on 1 June 1986. St David's North church is in the Presbytery of Dundee, which was in the synod of Angus and Mearns until the abolition of synods in 1992. |
