Bower formerly existed as a prebend of the Cathedral of Dornoch and there were, within the parish, chapels at Scarmclet and at Lyth. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1570, in the person of John Watson, reader. In 1947, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, the parish church of Bower (also known as Bower Holyrood) was united with the former united Free Church congregation of Bower New. After the union the charge continued under the name of Bower and a link was later established in 1970 with Watten. The kirk session sits within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Caithness. |
