There existed of old a chapel of St Mary's at Lybster and a parliamentary church was built here in 1836. The parish was later disjoined from that of Latheron and erected as an independent charge in 1887. In 1934, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Lybster parish church (also known as Lybster St Mary's) united with the former United Free Church congregation of Lybster Central. After the union, under the name of Lybster, both churches continued in use for public worship. A further union was later established in 1961 with Bruan to form the session of Lybster and Bruan and the original Lybster church building was later sold in 1989. The Kirk session has fallen within the jurisdiction of the presbytery of Caithness throughout its existence. |
