The Kirk Session of Arbroath Abbey originated in 1797, the year in which a chapel was first built here, the parish was later erected in 1869 when it was disjoined from that of Arbroath. In 1990 Arbroath Abbey united with Arbroath Old under the name of Arbroath Old and Abbey. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Arbroath, until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united together under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
