The church at Alford was granted to the Priory of Monynusk by Gilchrist, Earl of Mar, some time before 1207. Ministry began within the session in 1563 in the person of John Skene. From the early seventeenth century Alford came under the jurisdiction of Alford Presbytery, followed in 1962 by the Presbytery of Deeside and Alford. In 1929 the congregation took the name of Alford West to differentiate it from the former United Free congregation (Alford East). These two charges united in 1952, reverting to the name of Alford Church of Scotland. Both churches were used after the union and the interior of the former West church was completely renovated. On 4 September 1959 Alford became linked with the churches of Tullynessce and Forbes, and a further linking took place with Keig in 1977. Although only linked, the congregation sometimes used the rather clumsy title of Alford with Keig with Tullynessle and Forbes Church of Scotland. However, these charges eventually united on the 4 July 1999 to form, the rather more manageable, Howe Trinity Parish Church. |
