Assynt formerly existed as a prebend of the Cathedral of Dornoch and ministry of the session is recorded from 1576, in the person of William Gray. In 1931 Assynt established a union with the charge of Stoer and also with the former United Free Church congregation of Assynt South to form the session of Assynt and Stoer. Following the union the Assynt South Church was sold and a number of years later the former Stoer Church was closed due to dilapidation. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dornoch (with the exception of the years 1726 to 1736, when it was annexed from Dornoch and removed to the newly founded Presbytery of Tongue) until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Dornoch and the Presbytery of Tongue were united together under the name of the Presbytery of Sutherland. |
