In ancient times the vicarage of Rothesay belonged to the Abbey of Kilwinning and the church was dedicated to St Brioch, a later church however, possibly built as early as the 12th century, held the name of St Mary. Rothesay Parish Church, which was later termed Rothesay the High Kirk, was rebuilt in 1692 on the site of the earlier building and a further reconstruction was carried out in 1795. Within the bounds of the parish there existed, in addition to the parish church, a chapel of St Mary and also of St Bride. In 1973 Rothesay The High Kirk united with Rothesay St John's, continuing after the union under the name of Rothesay The High Kirk and a link was established later in the same year with Kingarth and Kilchattan Bay. The Kirk Session sits within the Presbytery of Dunoon. |
