The Kirk Session of Durness was known of old as Ardurness and the parish church formerly existed as a prebend of the Cathedral of Dornoch. In 1931, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Durness parish church, (which became known in later years as Durness Durine), joined with the former United Free Church congregation of Durness Sangamore. The two charges united under the name of Durness and after the union the former Sangamore church came into use as the parish church and the old parish church was put up for sale. In 1957 a link was established with Melness and Eribol however this arrangement was terminated in 1963 in favour of a link with Kinlochbervie, under the ministry of Rev C. I Maclean, minister at Kinlochbervie. Durness parish church was later sold in 1964. The kirk session sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Tongue, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Sutherland. |
