The old church of Strathfillan, which was dedicated to St Fillan, was united to Killin by the Commission of Parliament in 1617. This union however was severed in 1882 when the Parish of Strathfillan was disjoined once more from Killin and erected as a separate parish. There had previously existed on the site of the old church of Stathfillan the Augustinian Priory of Strathfillan, which was founded by King Robert I in 1314, and to which many pilgrims came to visit the relics of St Fillan, who was believed to posses miraculous powers. Mission chapels also sat within the parish at Crianlarich and at Bridge of Orchy. In 1843 the old parish church of Strathfillan, which had been repaired in 1773, was retained by the Free Church and a new church was later erected and dedicated in 1880. In 1930, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Strathfillan parish church joined with the congregation of the former United Free Church of Strathfillan West. After the union the two former United Free churches were sold and Strathfillan later formed a link with Glenorchy and Innishael in 1980. The kirk session originally sat within the Presbytery of Weem however it was transferred to the Presbytery of Dumbarton in 1900 and later became part of the Presbytery of Lorn. In 1963, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Lorn and the Presbytery of Mull were united together under the name of the presbytery of Lorn and Mull. |
