Glasgow Society of the Sons of Ministers of the Church of Scotland was founded in 1790, primarily to aid the children of deceased ministers who were in distressed circumstances. It obtained a seal of cause from the provost and council in April 1791. One of its prime movers and first president was the philosopher Thomas Reid, then Professor of Moral Philosophy at Glasgow University. Subsequent presidents included a number of university professors, landed proprietors and a few literary figures, among them John Gibson Lockhart. |
