The parish of Stewarton was anciently a vicarage belonging to the Abbey of Kilwinning and within the parish, in addition to the parish church, which was rebuilt in 1696, there existed a chapel of St Mary. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567, in the person of James Lummisdaill, reader. In later years Stewarton Parish church became known as Stewarton Laigh in order distinguish it from the two Free churches which were established in Stewarton, namely, Stewarton John Knox and Stewarton Cairns, and in 1961 the Parish Church united with Stewarton Cairns under the name of Stewarton St Columba's. The Kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Irvine and later of Irvine and Kilmarnock. |
