The Parish of Marykirk, known of old as Aberluthnot, formerly belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath and the parish church, which was rebuilt in 1806 was dedicated to St Mary. In 1933 Marykirk united with Muirton and following the union the session became known once more as Aberluthnot. Laurencekirk later established a link with Aberluthnot in 1979. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Fordoun and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Arbroath were united under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 Aberluthnot became part of the Presbytery of Kincardine and Deeside. |
