The ancient church of Abercorn, which was dedicated to St Serf, is believed to have initially been built in the 12th century on a site that can be traced back to a 7th century monastery, and despite having undergone reconstruction and restoration work in 1579 and again in 1893, parts of the original 12th structure still remain. The Parish Church of Abercorn later became termed Abercorn North in order to distinguish it from the United Free Church congregation of Abercorn, which bore the name Abercorn South. In 1946 however Abercorn South united with Winchburgh under the name of Winchburgh, after which point Abercorn North reverted back to its original name of Abercorn. In 1974 Abercorn established a link with Dalmeny. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Linlithgow, later of Linlithgow and Falkirk and, following the reconstruction of the presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
