The Old church of Tundergarth in the village of Lockerbie, which is thought to have initially been built in the 16th century, was replaced in 1776. The old church remained in use until 1906 when the building was abandoned, a new church having been erected in 1900, the ruins of the old church can still be seen standing close to the present building. In 1963 Tundergarth established a link with Lockerbie St Cuthbert's under the ministry of Rev H.D. Griffith, minister at Lockerbie St Cuthbert's. This link however was later terminated in 1986 in favour of a linkage with Eskdalemuir. The Kirk Session of Tundergarth sat within the Presbytery of Lochmabben, later of Annandale and, following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Annandale and Eskdale. In more recent years the Church of Tundergarth has become a memorial for those who died in the Lockerbie disaster of 1988. |
