The churches of Monkton (or Monk?s Prestwick) and Prestwick served medieval parishes, both belonging to Paisley Abbey. The two parishes were united soon after 1567. The lands of Crosbie chapel, in Dundonald parish, were temporarily included in Monkton from 1651 to 1688. A new church for the joint parish was built in 1835. The congregation came under the jurisdiction of Ayr Presbytery and was in the synod of Glasgow and Ayr until the reorganisation of 1929, thereafter in the synod of Ayr. Synods were abolished in 1993.The charge became known as Monkton and Prestwick North in 1981 due to the union of Monkton and Prestwick (St Cuthbert's) and Prestwick North churches. |
